Zelle to enter India before end-2025, targeting US-India remittance corridor

Our read

Zelle's India entry with ZelleUSD stablecoin forces us to rethink remittance UX and settlement rails before UPI-linked competitors lock in the corridor.

The report,

US peer-to-peer payment service Zelle will expand to India before year-end, targeting the US-India remittance corridor. It also unveiled ZelleUSD, a dollar-backed stablecoin, to support future cross-border payments via participating banks.

Reported figures

From the report. Source details below

$1.2 trillion sent via Zelle in 2025

Also in the report

  • 23 billion UPI transactions in May
  • ₹29.9 trillion ($313 billion) UPI value

Other figures

  • 720 banks on UPI

Why it matters to operators

Zelle's pre-2025 India launch with BofA/JPM/Wells partnerships signals urgent need to evaluate remittance corridor partnerships or stablecoin settlement tie-ups before incumbents consolidate.

The counter-case

The case against this reading — not reported by the source.

Zelle is fundamentally a US closed-loop bank network with zero brand recognition, regulatory licensing, or distribution in India. RBI requires inbound remittances to land via authorized dealer banks under FEMA, and retail rupee payments must route through UPI rails it cannot bypass. Competing against Wise, Remitly, and bank-led UPI-linked NRI corridors (which already settle in seconds at near-zero cost) leaves no pricing wedge. ZelleUSD as a stablecoin faces an outright hostile RBI stance on private stablecoins and crypto-rupee conversion, making the settlement story largely theatrical for US audiences.
